Download

Not released yet

There’s no Kiln image to download yet.

Kiln boots on x86_64 in QEMU from a UEFI disk image and has a text installer, but no published image or live ISO to run it from. Until then, build it yourself from source.

Works today

  • UEFI boot through GRUB, in QEMU
  • Networking over DHCP
  • kiln-installer, a text-mode installer
  • Base packages from the official repository

Coming next

  • A live ISO to run the installer from
  • BIOS boot
  • A desktop

Build it yourself

You need an x86_64 Linux host with Git, Rust, Cargo, a C compiler, static glibc development libraries and podman.

  1. Get the source and build kiln

    Host
    git clone https://github.com/kilnlinux/Kiln.gitcd KilnRUSTFLAGS="-C target-feature=+crt-static" cargo build --release --target x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu --manifest-path kiln/Cargo.toml
  2. Start the builder container

    Host
    podman build -t kiln-builder .podman run --rm -it --userns=keep-id -v "$PWD":/kiln:Z kiln-builder
  3. Bootstrap the toolchain and temporary system

    Inside the builder
    ./bootstrap/00-host-check.sh./bootstrap/01-prepare.sh./bootstrap/02-cross-toolchain.sh./bootstrap/03-temp-tools.shexit
  4. Build the base system and boot it

    Host
    ./bootstrap/04-enter.sh./bootstrap/04-enter.sh bash -c 'cd /kiln && kiln build-all --force'./bootstrap/06-image.sh run# log in as root, password "kiln"

Keep Cargo’s target directory at kiln/target. 06-image.sh also needs e2fsprogs, dosfstools, mtools, util-linux and QEMU with its bundled OVMF firmware on the host. The development guide explains each step.
